In-season testing to return in 2014

In-season testing will return to Formula 1 next year, after teams approved plans for four post-race sessions in 2014. Following a lengthy meeting of think-tank the Sporting Working Committee in the Montreal paddock on Saturday night, a majority of teams voted in favour of a testing rethink for next year. The plans, which now just need final approval from the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council which meets at the end of this month, will open the way for four two-day test sessions that will take place after selected grands prix
WRC calendar set to be confirmed

The calendar for next year’s World Rally Championship is expected to be confirmed at next month’s June World Motor Sport Council meeting. The final 2014 schedule of events was not available for discussion at the WRC Commission meeting in Geneva last week, because some of the events have yet to sign the agreement with the WRC promoter. A fax vote will decide the calendar to be put forward for ratification by WMSC at Goodwood on June 28.

F1 practice tyre rules to get revamp

Formula 1 teams will be handed an extra set of tyres for the first 30 minutes of practice from the start of next year – but plans to limit them only to rookie drivers have been dropped completely. A proposal initiated by Force India for teams to be given extra sets of tyres for the first part of FP1 from this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix if they ran rookies was abandoned after failing to get the necessary support
F3 Masters saved as GT date moves

The Masters of Formula 3 race has been saved after the FIA World Motor Sports Council agreed to a dispensation in the F3 European Championship sporting regulations, AUTOSPORT has learned. The category’s Zandvoort classic, which has moved to a new date of July 7, will still be joined by the FIA GT Series, which has also moved its Dutch date forward a week.
Turkish GP return up to government

Turkish motorsport officials say the return of the country’s grand prix to the Formula 1 calendar is now up to the government, after agreeing terms with Bernie Ecclestone. Istanbul Park, which hosted an F1 grand prix from 2005-11, was tipped for a return to the calendar on Wednesday. This was after the FIA World Motor Sport Council announced it had moved the German GP forward to reserve the July 21 date for another, yet-to-be-named European-based event
Austin seeks new date for 2013 race

United States Grand Prix organisers want the date of the 2013 event at the Austin circuit changed in order to avoid a clash with an American football match. The Circuit of the Americas race is scheduled for the weekend of November 17 next year following confirmation of the schedule by the FIA World Motor Sport Council yesterday.

FIA moves 2013 German GP forward

The 2013 German Grand Prix has been moved forward one week to accommodate another European race, the FIA World Motor Sport Council confirmed today. With a three-week gap resulting from the date change, the 21st July has now been reserved for a European-based event. The German event will now run on 7th July
IRC canned as Eurosport gets ERC

Eurosport will become the new promoter of the FIA European Rally Championship, in a deal that spells the end of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. The announcement, made following a World Motor Sport Council meeting, brings to end speculation regarding the future of the ERC and Eurosport’s own IRC. The latter will cease at the end of this current season after a six-year run.
New doubts over New Jersey Grand Prix

New doubts have been raised over the planned 2013 New Jersey Formula 1 street race after Bernie Ecclestone revealed the existing contract for the race had been annulled. The provisional 2013 schedule circulated during last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix had the second American event slated for a mid-June date. That was despite previous suggestions of the New Jersey project encountering difficulties , and the departure of its chief Tom Cotter in August .

WRC rounds fail to sign FIA contract

None of the events involved in the 2013 World Rally Championship have signed the FIA’s proposed agreement for next year’s series, according to AUTOSPORT’s sources. The FIA issued the five-page contract on May 28 and stipulated the agreement had to be signed and returned by close of business on Friday June 8. Failure to do so would result in the event not being included on the 2013 calendar.
WRC events facing Friday deadline

The rallies involved in next year’s World Rally Championship have just one more day to sign and return contracts to the FIA if they want to be part of the 2013 calendar. As revealed in this week’s AUTOSPORT magazine , there are significant concerns from many of the rally organisers at the demand the contract makes for them to pay an additional £80,000 to be part of the series.
WRC loses Nokia’s backing

The World Rally Championship has lost its multi-million pound Nokia deal, it was confirmed on Wednesday. WRC Commission president Jarmo Mahonen admitted last week’s Acropolis Rally would be the final event in the association between the WRC and Nokia – a move confirmed today when the ‘Powered by Nokia’ branding was removed from the series’ official website. Mahonen admitted the loss of the deal, reckoned to have been a long-term commitment worth around £2.5m per season, was a significant blow to the series.
Audi to appear in World GT1 in 2012

Ecclestone hopes Bahrain goes ahead

Bernie Ecclestone says he still hopes there are no obstacles to next year’s Bahrain Grand Prix going ahead – but has left the door open to calling the race off if there is clear evidence of atrocities taking place in the nation. The Gulf event was first postponed, then cancelled, this season due to the political situation in Bahrain during the spring. This week the FIA World Motor Sport Council approved a 2012 calendar featuring Sakhir as round four on 22 April, but there have been concerns over continuing unrest in the country
GP circuits for Formula 2 in 2012

Formula 2 will visit five current grand prix venues in its fourth season of competition, after an eight-event calendar was approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. The 2012 schedule will also feature two new races, with the series set for maiden visits to Paul Ricard in July and the Hungaroring in September. It will open, as was the case this year, with Silverstone in April, before moving on to the Algarve – where F2 raced in 2010 – the Nurburgring, Spa-Francorchamps and Brands Hatch.
FIA committed to securing WRC future

The FIA has said it is working on an “immediate plan” to make sure the 2012 World Rally Championship goes ahead as planned following the news that CSI has gone into administration. Convers Sports Initiatives, the parent company of the World Rally Championship’s commercial rights holder North One, went into receivership last month. The man in charge of CSI, Vladimir Antonov, was arrested in London as part of an investigation into the striping of assets from Bankas Snoras
Ecclestone gives Austin new deadline

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has given Austin organisers another week to try and save the 2012 United States Grand Prix. “The deadline hasn’t been met, so we are still trying to make it happen,” Ecclestone told The Associated Press on Wednesday, when the original deadline expired. “They need to get some money and a pen as soon as possible
