Antonio Felix da Costa believes that his recent mechanical gremlins in Formula Renault 3.5 should be solved following a short test in the series’ summer break. Red Bull junior da Costa endured one of his worst weekends of the season at his backer’s home race in Austria last time out, where he suffered a loss of oil in the first race and his engine shut down on the grid for race two. While da Costa initially suspected the problem was engine-related, a test at an airfield this month confirmed that the problem was related to the car’s electrics and the ‘Supercaps’ system that is on the car instead of a traditional battery.

Renault Clio Cup racer Ignas Gelzidis has been voted Europe’s most promising young driver by the FIA Institute. The Institute’s Young Driver Excellence Academy European selection event ran in Austria earlier this week and the 22-year-old Lithuanian was won a guaranteed place on the programme ahead of 24 other drivers from the continent

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz will be digging in to his own pockets to fund the return of the Austrian Grand Prix. The energy drinks company announced this week that it had reached agreement with Bernie Ecclestone for a seven-year deal that will bring F1 back to the Spielberg track for the first time since 2003. With the high costs of hosting races making it difficult for promoters to secure a profit from F1, governments have often had to step in to help bankroll grands prix.

Tom Boardman will skip the World Touring Car Championship’s forthcoming event in Argentina as a result of the damage he suffered in race one in Porto. The Briton only returned to the WTCC fold in Portugal, having missed the previous two events in Austria and Russia due to lingering engine problems with his Special Tuning Racing SEAT.

Tom Coronel will not line up on pole for the World Touring Car Championship reverse-grid second race in Porto due to a timing glitch during qualifying. The order will instead be reshuffled after it was discovered that Honda’s Gabriele Tarquini and Pepe Oriola in the Tuenti-run Chevrolet were allocated wrong, and slower, lap times. Oriola had been set to start both races from 12th on the grid, but has now been elevated to sixth under the amended times
