Auto GP championship challenger Kimiya Sato believes the experience of testing for Sauber in Formula 1′s young driver test last month will boost his title prospects. The 23-year-old Japanese lost his long held advantage in the drivers’ standings after a first-lap retirement at Mugello last month, although he still shares the points lead and is behind Sergio Campana only on countback. Sato expects his testing experience will be of benefit however as he expects it to put him at ease for the second half of this year’s Auto GP campaign “Definitely I’m going to be more relaxed behind the wheel of my Auto GP car because it will be like a step back,” said Sato

British single-seater powerhouse Fortec Motorsport is set to enter the Auto GP series in 2014. The company’s ex-Formula 3 team manager and senior engineer Mick Kouros will head up the squad, while F3 chief engineer Andi Scott and fellow engineer Russell Dixon have taken joint charge of the F3 team. Auto GP championship challenger Sergio Campana has confirmed his participation in this weekend’s fifth round of the championship at Mugello. Campana’s campaign had been thrown into doubt after a decision by Giuseppe Cipriani, his Ibiza Racing team’s owner and team-mate, to curtail his season owing to a back complaint and business commitments. Cipriani was absent from the preceding meeting at Silverstone in June, although Ibiza fielded two cars for Campana and Fabrizio Crestani.

Carlos Slim Domit believes there is a “good future ahead” for the Mexican Grand Prix, which it is hoped will return to the Formula 1 calendar in the next few years. Slim, who has been instrumental in the careers of Sergio Perez and Esteban Gutierrez through his Escuderia Telmex driver programme and sponsorship of the Sauber team, is a key player in the plan to bring F1 back to Mexico for the first time since 1992.

CONCORD, N.C. — Two-time NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Randy LaJoie has been reinstated by NASCAR after completing a NASCAR-approved treatment program after testing positive for marijuana earlier this season. “I am thankful to NASCAR for reinstating me for competition, and grateful to my friends and family who supported me through this time,” said LaJoie, who was suspended on June 22 for violating of NASCAR’s substance abuse policy.
