IndyCar race director Beaux Barfield insists that he was correct to penalise Ganassi’s Scott Dixon for the pitlane collision with a Penske crew member during Sunday’s race at Sonoma . Dixon was leading ahead of Will Power when the pair stopped together on lap 65 at the end of their third stint.

IndyCar will make a second attempt at a standing start in race two of this weekend’s Toronto double-header after the race one start was waved off. Saturday’s start was abandoned after Josef Newgarden’s car stopped on the grid, and under series regulations a rolling start was used in its place. That rule was introduced following concerns over whether IndyCar clutches – which are not designed for standing starts – could survive two attempts in close succession.

Dario Franchitti has been restored to third place for Sunday’s IndyCar race in Toronto after series officials rescinded his post-race penalty for blocking Will Power. The Ganassi driver was issued a 25-second penalty for impeding Power on the final lap of race one ; a result that dropped the Franchitti to 13th and promoted Marco Andretti onto the podium.

The IndyCar Series has altered the heat qualifying system for its Iowa Speedway round; lengthening the races, offering points and allowing drivers from opening heats to progress to the pole-deciding final. When the heat system was first used last year, drivers were split into three heat groups based on practice times. A trio of 30-lap races then decided the order, with heats one and two sorting the grid from row five backwards, and heat three determining the top eight positions in the starting line-up
