Red Bull says it must get to the bottom of Mark Webber’s ongoing start problems after seeing them cost the Australian another strong result in Belgium. Webber’s campaign has been blighted by a series of poor starts and, at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday, his afternoon was hampered when he had another poor getaway from third on the grid.

Red Bull confessed it never expected to win the Belgian Grand Prix, let alone deliver the dominant performance that moved Sebastian Vettel closer to a fourth Formula 1 title. Vettel was in a class of his own during the race at Spa-Francorchamps, blasting past polesitter Lewis Hamilton on the first lap and then never being challenged again.

Sebastian Vettel took a routine victory for Red Bull in a totally dry Belgian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso was able to tiger through from ninth on the grid to second ahead of polesitter Lewis Hamilton, but fellow title contender Kimi Raikkonen’s long finishing streak ended with a brake problem

Jenson Button believes his sixth place in Belgian Grand Prix qualifying was not a fluke of conditions but a reflection of McLaren’s improving pace. The Briton claimed his best grid-spot of the season amid wildly fluctuating weather that produced a breathtaking, but unpredictable, end to qualifying. Rather than credit the weather, however, Button believes sixth is representative of McLaren’s true pace in Belgium, and is even optimistic he can achieve his target of fighting for the podium should it stay dry on Sunday.

Lotus Formula 1 team chairman Gerard Lopez has hit out at reports that his team is in financial trouble. Lopez, co-owner of Genii Capital, which bought the then-Renault squad in late 2009, believes that the nature of the team’s €120 million debt has been misunderstood. He also denied suggestions that staff had not been paid, and laughed off claims that a strike at the team’s Enstone base had been threatened recently.

Ex-Formula 1 driver Philippe Alliot will return to the wheel of a Ligier grand prix car in historic racing later this year. The 59-year-old Frenchman, who contested 23 grands prix for the French squad in 1986 and 1990, has purchased a Ligier JS11 from team founder Guy Ligier together with two friends. He will race the car for the first time at the invitational historic F1 event on the new Baku street circuit in Azerbaijan in October

Former Le Mans 24 Hours winner Timo Bernhard will contest the Spa 24 Hours later this month as part of a concerted pushed by Porsche to win the race for the first time since 2010. Bernhard is one of seven factory drivers to have been placed with what are officially privateer entries for the blue-riband race of the Blancpain Endurance Series on July 27/28. The German will join fellow factory driver Jorg Bergmeister and Toyota World Endurance Championship driver Nicolas Lapierre in a 911 GT3-R entered by the French Almeras team

BUDAPEST — The American Cypher Group has officially withdrawn its entry to become the 13th F-1 team next year. “We remain completely committed to developing a credible and viable F-1 team, and were able to raise a considerable amount of sponsorship and interest in recent months,” it said in a statement. “However, after much deliberation we have decided that the budget we have is not sufficient to allow us to pursue the project in a manner befitting the series.” Time is running out
