Nico Rosberg admits Mercedes was surprised to find itself trailing Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari in the Belgian Grand Prix . The German said his squad had anticipated a pace deficit to Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull, but was taken by surprise by Ferrari’s race performance . “We expected to be a little slower than Red Bull, but we didn’t expect Ferrari to be quicker than us,” Rosberg said.

James Nash made the most of a constantly squabbling pack to cruise to his second World Touring Car victory in the series’ second Porto race. The Briton started from pole, protected his advantage through the first few corners and therein gradually eased away as constant fights broke out behind. Chief protagonists were the Chevrolets, with Michel Nykjaer, Pepe Oriola, Yvan Muller and Tom Chilton all fighting their way up from the lower reaches of the reverse-grid top 10 starting order.

Allan McNish climbed behind the wheel of the #1 Audi for the second time and continued to stretch away from the chasing pack as the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours neared its halfway mark. The Briton inherited a one-lap lead from team-mate Tom Kristensen and continued where the Dane had left off, easing away from the chasing Toyota TS030s. Anthony Davidson, who took over from Stephane Sarrazin in the #8 HYBRID, surrendered around one second per lap to McNish across the final 30 minutes of the 11th hour.

LMP2 polesitter OAK Racing is confident of fighting for class victory after making a breakthrough with the set-up on its Morgan-Nissan. The #24 car of Olivier Pla, David Heinemeier Hansson and Alex Brundle struggled to find a good balance in Wednesday’s practice and was hampered by numerous disruptions caused by red flags.
