IndyCar has targeted a move outside of North America by 2015 with a series of off-season races around the world that could form a winter championship. The aim of the races would be to give IndyCar teams new revenue streams over an off-season that looks likely to grow from next year, when the calendar could climax as early as the end of August.

Poland’s return to the World Rally Championship is set to be confirmed when the 2014 calendar is voted on later this week. The calendar was expected at June’s World Motor Sport Council meeting, but had to be delayed due to ongoing contractual negotiations between individual event organisers and the WRC promoter.

Leading IndyCar team Andretti Autosport will field a team in Formula E. The squad, run by 1991 CART IndyCar champion Michael Andretti, has taken Tony Kanaan, Dan Wheldon, Dario Franchitti and last year’s title winner Ryan Hunter-Reay to IndyCar crowns and won the Indianapolis 500 with both Wheldon and Franchitti. Andretti joins the Drayson and China teams among the first of the 10 outfits expected for Formula E’s inaugural season in 2014

Dani Pedrosa admits it was a “big blow” to miss the German Grand Prix due to injury, but insists he is not disheartened by surrendering his MotoGP points lead. The Spaniard had held a nine-point advantage over Jorge Lorenzo heading into the Sachsenring, with team-mate Marc Marquez a further 14 points adrift. Lorenzo was ruled out of the weekend on Friday following a massive crash which further damaged the collarbone he broke in Assen, but rather than capitalise on his rival’s absence Pedrosa joined Lorenzo on the sidelines after a massive highside on Saturday morning.

Berlin has been revealed as the final city that will host a round of the Formula E championship when the series kicks off in 2014. The German capital is the third European city to join the series alongside London and Rome.

Next year’s World Rally Championship will include one completely new round, according to FIA rally director Jarmo Mahonen. Mahonen confirmed to AUTOSPORT that one of the candidate rallies running this season will be included on the 2014 WRC calendar expected in coming weeks. While Mahonen would not be drawn on the specifics of the calendar and refused to confirm a drop from 13 to 12 rounds for next season, he did say a new event would feature.

Auto GP championship challenger Sergio Campana has confirmed his participation in this weekend’s fifth round of the championship at Mugello. Campana’s campaign had been thrown into doubt after a decision by Giuseppe Cipriani, his Ibiza Racing team’s owner and team-mate, to curtail his season owing to a back complaint and business commitments. Cipriani was absent from the preceding meeting at Silverstone in June, although Ibiza fielded two cars for Campana and Fabrizio Crestani.

Mercedes trialled a version of its passive DRS during opening practice for the German Grand Prix. With teams particularly eager to get it ready for some of the tracks coming up on the calendar, especially Spa-Francorchamps, Mercedes has followed the example of Lotus and brought it in to action. The device was fitted to the rear of Nico Rosberg’s car during the opening part of FP1 at the Nurburgring, before being removed.
