The grid for new Asian Le Mans Series will grow over the remainder of the season from the 11 cars entered for this weekend’s championship opener at the Inje Speedium in South Korea, according to the series boss. Mark Thomas admitted disappointment with the entry for the first of this year’s four Asian LMS races, but insisted that more cars would arrive before the end of the season. “Of course we would have liked more, but the most important thing is that we are here and the race is on,” he told AUTOSPORT from Inje

The DTM will return to China next year with a race in a yet-to-be-decided city. Championship promoter the ITR announced on Monday that the series – which last visited the country in 2010 – would stage an event next autumn either in Shanghai or Guangdong.

Fernando Alonso’s fifth place in the Hungarian Grand Prix is in jeopardy as the stewards are investigating a potential breach of DRS rules. A statement from FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer read: “After the race DRS activation data from car #3 was analysed. It was found that the driver has activated the adjustable bodywork in three occasions when he was more than one second behind another car.

Lotus believes that the safety car was the key factor that cost it victory in the German Grand Prix. Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean appeared well placed to beat eventual victor Sebastian Vettel at the Nurburgring, but in the end the Red Bull driver had just enough speed to secure an emotional home win. Although Raikkonen has questioned the team’s late call to bring him in to the pits for a change on to soft tyres, Lotus boss Eric Boullier thinks it was not that moment – but rather the safety car earlier in the race – that cost it.

Carlos Sainz Jr will make his Formula 1 testing debut when he joins Antonio Felix da Costa in the Red Bull line-up for next month’s young driver test at Silverstone. Sainz, son of World Rally legend Carlos, is currently racing in GP3. The 18-year-old will drive on the final day of the July 17-19 test, after da Costa has had the car for the first two.

The Asian Le Mans Series is on course to hit its target of 16 cars in time for its opening round in South Korea in August. Series boss Mark Thomas has revealed that he has 12 confirmed entries for far and expects to firm up at least four more ahead of the delayed series opener at the new Autopia on August 4.

SEBRING, Fla. — Chinese driver Ho-Pin Tung, who serves as a reserve and test driver for the Renault Formula One team, made history over the weekend by becoming the first Chinese driver to take the wheel of an IndyCar during a test with the FAZZT Race Team at Sebring Int’l Raceway. The test, funded by FAZZT’s primary sponsor Bowers Wilkins, was the first step in what the team hopes will become a fulltime effort for Tung in a second IZOD IndyCar Series entry for FAZZT in 2011.
