Jari-Matti Latvala edged out a little breathing space over Thierry Neuville by the end of Friday’s leg of Rally Germany. A string of four straight fastest times had brought Neuville’s M-Sport Ford to within two seconds of Latvala’s rally-leading Volkswagen.

Sebastien Ogier claimed his first Rally Finland victory by a comfortable margin, while Thierry Neuville won an amazing battle for second. Nine-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb has admitted Kris Meeke faces an uphill task when he steps aboard a Citroen DS3 WRC for this week’s Rally Finland. Meeke is standing in for Khalid Al Qassimi and driving for the Citroen Abu Dhabi team for the first time in Jyvaslyla.

Sebastien Loeb insists the chances of him competing in any more World Rally Championship rounds beyond France this season are increasingly remote. The outgoing world champion’s home event is the final instalment of his planned four-rally programme with Citroen this season. Citroen team principal Yves Matton remains confident his firm will be competing in World Touring Cars next year with Sebastien Loeb. Matton confirmed a decision will be taken on the company’s 2014 plans before the end of the month. “The decision on the World Touring Car Championship is coming shortly, but I cannot say Monday because if I say Monday then you will call me and ask,” Matton said.

British driver Liam Doran came back from what he described as a “rookie mistake” to win the fifth round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship at Hell in Norway. Doran forgot to take the jokerlap in his first heat race of the day, putting him on the back foot for the weekend ahead. However, a strong set of heat times put the Citroen DS3 driver back into a qualifying position for back row of semi-final two
