McLaren believes that some of its problems this season were caused by its 2012 car “overdelivering” towards the end of last year. Speaking in an exclusive interview with AUTOSPORT , team principal Martin Whitmarsh said that the combination of the 2012 car overperforming compared to its windtunnel model and the 2013 car underperforming led to McLaren losing its way at the start of this year

Sauber thinks it could be on the verge of an upswing in form over the second half of the season. After an encouraging performance in the German Grand Prix , where Nico Hulkenberg delivered a second consecutive point-scoring finish, Sauber thinks it is finally getting to the bottom of the car problems that dogged its start to the campaign.

A perfect storm of kerb design, track layout, internal shockwaves and low pressures is likely to have caused the British Grand Prix tyre dramas, according to leading Formula 1 engineers. As Pirelli continues analysis of the remains of the tyre blow-outs at its Milan headquarters, preliminary investigations have pointed towards a combination of factors being to blame. Much of the focus during the race was on the kerb layout at Silverstone; with drivers being advised to stay clear of them during the race once it emerged that damage was being done to the tyres

Fernando Alonso – 17th/10th: “This morning, we lost the first session because of the rain and had to squeeze all the work we had been unable to do into the afternoon session. Our programme for today was no different to usual and as normal, it was important to gather data relating to tyre behaviour, which here too will be the key factor. At Silverstone, you need an aerodynamic package that is suited to the combination of fast corners that are the main feature at this track.

ABU DHABI — The overall consensus was positive from the drivers and teams after their first experience testing the Pirelli tires that replace the Bridgestone rubber in 2011. All 12 teams tested Friday and Saturday in Abu Dhabi
