Heikki Kovalainen says he will not compromise his stance over bringing money to Formula 1 teams even if it means he is left off the grid again in 2014. The Finn lost his Caterham seat this year after three seasons when the team required drivers with funding. He has continued to work with Caterham and made his latest Friday practice appearance for the squad at last weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

The FIA would be risking significantly impacting upon the 2014 Formula 1 world championship should it opt not to extend Pirelli’s tyre supply deal, McLaren’s Jonathan Neale believes. Pirelli’s current contract runs out at the end of 2013, and its motorsport boss Paul Hembery has warned it could quit the sport entirely should its “bizarre” situation not be remedied quickly

Suzuki has been able to pinpoint the direction of its future MotoGP development following its two-day test at Motegi, test team manager Davide Brivio said. The Japanese firm, which will return to the championship as a factory entrant in 2015, brought two different frames for Randy de Puniet to sample. As a result of the running it has been able to identify the best configuration, which will now form the basis of future development efforts

Sportscar ace Lucas Luhr will make his IndyCar debut at Sonoma in August after landing a one-off drive with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. The 34-year-old German, who won the 2011 GT1 World title and is on course to defend his American Le Mans Series LMP1 crown this year, will partner team regular Josef Newgarden at the California road course. Luhr said that the drive had come about thanks to his links with Honda Performance Development, which is involved in his ALMS programme with LMP1 squad Pickett Racing and also powers Fisher’s Indy machines

Jenson Button says McLaren’s season is not a write-off, despite the team switching its development focus on to the 2014 car. Button thinks work still being done can help the team move forward, and he is even targeting a podium for the next race in Belgium. “We still want to win a race, and I still think we can win a race,” said Button.

Former Subaru driver Chris Atkinson has become the latest driver to be signed to Hyundai’s expanding test team. The Australian joins Juho Hanninen and Bryan Bouffier in the development of Hyundai Motorsport’s i20 WRC for the rest of the season. The 33-year-old reigning Asia-Pacific Rally Champion will test the i20 WRC for the first time next week, but was present in Alzenau, Germany to meet the team and see the car last month.

Double world champion Casey Stoner will make a dramatic return to MotoGP action as a test rider for Honda in the coming months. The Australian will undertake four tests at Motegi for Honda’s R&D team, with the aim of evolving the RC213V and developing the new production-based racer Honda will sell to selected teams for next year’s championship. Honda however categorically ruled out Stoner making a race return

Kamui Kobayashi says his goal remains to return to Formula 1 racing in the future after being left without a grand prix drive for the 2013 season. The Japanese driver, who raced for the Sauber team last year, was unable to secure a deal for the current season despite raising almost 8 million euros through a fundraising website .

Marussia has confirmed it will use Ferrari engines when the new 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged power units are introduced at the start of next season. The deal is part of a wider technical partnership, which includes the team being supplied with gearboxes and related systems. Team CEO Andy Webb stressed the significance of the deal for the team’s long-term future.

Honda has revealed that it will base its new Formula 1 operations at a factory in Milton Keynes. The Japanese manufacturer is returning to F1 with McLaren in 2015 and has now finalised plans to have its European base at a facility already prepared for Mugen. Although the development and manufacture of the new V6 turbo engines will be done at Honda’s R&D facility at Tochigi in Japan, Honda wanted to base its personnel and support operations in the United Kingdom.

Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali insists his team is still ’100 per cent’ in contention for this year’s Formula 1 world championship. The Italian squad has not shown race-winning pace in the last four races after Fernando Alonso’s victory in the Spanish Grand Prix. Alonso, fourth in Germany on Sunday, said after the race that only strategy had helped the Italian team fight for a podium finish

Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes is now going into grand prix weekends as the favourite for success. The team is up to second in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship, has taken pole for five of the eight races so far in 2013, and claimed two victories – only one less than Red Bull and equal to Ferrari. “Slowly but surely we are dropping into the role of being favourites, which is fantastic,” said Rosberg.

I only ran with the development and hard tyre so didn’t go for a faster lap, but it didn’t feel too bad and we can work out where everything will be once we put it all together.

Our programme for today was no different to usual and as normal, it was important to gather data relating to tyre behaviour, which here too will be the key factor. At Silverstone, you need an aerodynamic package that is suited to the combination of fast corners that are the main feature at this track.
