Red Bull says it must get to the bottom of Mark Webber’s ongoing start problems after seeing them cost the Australian another strong result in Belgium. Webber’s campaign has been blighted by a series of poor starts and, at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday, his afternoon was hampered when he had another poor getaway from third on the grid.

Lotus believes that the safety car was the key factor that cost it victory in the German Grand Prix. Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean appeared well placed to beat eventual victor Sebastian Vettel at the Nurburgring, but in the end the Red Bull driver had just enough speed to secure an emotional home win. Although Raikkonen has questioned the team’s late call to bring him in to the pits for a change on to soft tyres, Lotus boss Eric Boullier thinks it was not that moment – but rather the safety car earlier in the race – that cost it.

Fabio Leimer has been given a 10-place grid penalty for the second GP2 race at Silverstone as a punishment for taking championship leader Stefano Coletti out on Saturday . Coletti was trying to hang on to fourth position in the closing stages when Leimer made a passing attempt into Brooklands

British driver Liam Doran came back from what he described as a “rookie mistake” to win the fifth round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship at Hell in Norway. Doran forgot to take the jokerlap in his first heat race of the day, putting him on the back foot for the weekend ahead. Frank Williams has praised Valtteri Bottas for both his off-track attitude as well as his out-and-out speed. Bottas was one of the stars of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend when he shone in the tricky wet qualifying conditions to deliver a career-best third on the grid
