Paul Hembery: “There was a difference of over a second between the medium and soft compounds, which obviously had an effect on the chosen strategy for qualifying, as it will do during the race tomorrow. The soft tyre was definitely the tyre to qualify on but those who start the race on the medium tyre might be able to gain track position when the soft tyre runners come in for their first stop earlier than them. We’re expecting most people to stop twice, with the emphasis on the medium tyre during the race: and that will be at the heart of the race strategy that the teams plan tonight

McLaren has faith that there will be no repeat of the Silverstone tyre dramas at this weekend’s German Grand Prix following the first running of the new rubber. With Pirelli bringing Kevlar-belted tyres , allied to imposing strict limits on camber and pressures, McLaren sporting director Sam Michael says that early indications point to a trouble free weekend. “We ran the medium compound this morning and put quite a few laps on it just to make sure there is no issue,” he explained.

Formula 1 drivers have warned that they will boycott the German Grand Prix if there is any repeat of the Silverstone tyre problems over the weekend. Following a meeting of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) in the Nurburgring paddock on Thursday night, the body issued a strongly worded statement making clear its unhappiness at the current situation in F1. Although Pirelli is adamant that the Kevlar-belted tyres it has brought to the Nurburgring will not suffer a repeat of the dramatic failures that blighted the race at Silverstone, the GPDA is not fully satisfied

Audi was better prepared than ever in its successful bid for a 12th Le Mans 24 Hours victory last weekend, according to race winner Allan McNish. McNish, who took victory at the wheel of the Audi R18 e-tron quattro he shared with Tom Kristensen and Loic Duval, has paid testament to the Audi Sport and Joest Racing organisations in the wake of the race. “To me, the team prepared better than any other year to fight off the challenge of Toyota,” he said.

Helio Castroneves will be forced to drop back to 11th on the grid for Sunday’s IndyCar race at Iowa Speedway after Penske elected to change the Brazilian’s engine. Castroneves had initially claimed pole by winning the third heat race on Saturday evening, but he will incur a 10-place penalty for having a new Chevrolet unit installed.

Adrian Sutil will approach FIA race director Charlie Whiting about what he feels is an inconsistent application of Formula 1′s blue flag rules. Sutil was given a drive-through penalty for disregarding blue flags when the drivers battling for second place came up to lap him. But the German vehemently disagreed with the officials’ call.
