Mercedes has faith its disappointing Belgian Grand Prix form was a one-off, and sees no reason why it cannot get back to winning ways in the next Formula 1 race in Italy. Lewis Hamilton had headed into the Spa weekend touted as Sebastian Vettel’s main rival for the world championship. But despite taking pole position , Hamilton was powerless to stop Vettel blasting past him on the first lap and pulling away to take a dominant victory

The FIA has launched an investigation into the delivery of timing and tracking in the World Rally Championship. Previous supplier Stage One Technology was dropped in favour of Spanish firm SIT this year. The teams, event organisers and drivers have been frustrated from the start of the season by a variety of issues with both the timing and tracking

After the start, I was able to hold position on the Option, but once we pitted for the Prime tyre, I really struggled for pace and couldn’t push as hard as I wanted to in order to get more out of the car. I did try to push more, but the car wouldn’t take it and I began to lock the brakes and slide too much, as I didn’t have enough grip.

Citroen team principal Yves Matton remains confident his firm will be competing in World Touring Cars next year with Sebastien Loeb. Matton confirmed a decision will be taken on the company’s 2014 plans before the end of the month. “The decision on the World Touring Car Championship is coming shortly, but I cannot say Monday because if I say Monday then you will call me and ask,” Matton said.

PG Andersson insists his focus is firmly on the finish of Rally Italy as the Swede returns to World Rally Car competition. The former factory Suzuki WRC driver, a two-time Junior WRC champion, has not had a top-class car for two seasons, driving mainly for Proton in S2000 competition. He returns to the sport’s highest level in a Ford Fiesta RS WRC for the remaining European rounds of the series and completed a 75-mile test in the car ahead of the Sardinia event, which starts on Friday.

Formula 1 is to have a new medical delegate next year, after the FIA decided not to renew the contract of the long-serving Gary Hartstein beyond the end of this season. Hartstein replaced the late Sid Watkins as F1′s chief doctor from the start of the 2005 season and has worked at every race since. As well as his efforts at the tracks, the American also played a key role in developing new medical safety policies for the governing body through his work as chair of the FIA Institute’s Medical Training Working Group

Formula 3 Euro Series and European F3 champion Daniel Juncadella completed his Formula 1 test with Ferrari at the Vallelunga circuit on Friday. The Spaniard earned the outing after winning the FIA’s new European F3 crown this year. Juncadella drove Ferrari’s 2009 single seater, the F60, and completed six runs of eight laps each at the dry, but foggy Italian circuit.
