Audi will give ex-Formula 1 driver Lucas di Grassi and Formula Renault 3.5 race winner Nico Muller DTM tests at Spielberg this week. Brazilian di Grassi, 29, has been a member of the German manufacturer’s World Endurance Championship line-up since late last year and finished third at the Le Mans 24 Hours sharing an R18 e-tron quattro with Marc Gene and Oliver Jarvis

Mark Webber believes the quality of the Formula 1 grid has dropped since he made his debut in 2002 because of the prevalence of pay drivers. The Australian believes financial concerns are forcing teams to focus on budget rather than talent, and that some of the most worthy drivers are being overlooked. In what he labelled a ‘sad state’, Webber believes that has diluted the quality of the current grid to the extent it is actually weaker than it was 13 years ago when he made a home soil debut with Minardi.

Sebastian [Vettel] tried many times to get past me, and clipped my rear wheel into Turn Two – he may have damaged his wing, but I was lucky not to puncture. “With Romain [Grosjean], I don’t know what he thought – unless I took to the grass, it was inevitable we were going to touch! Kris Meeke says his first test in a Peugeot 208 Supercar left him shocked by the performance of the Albatec Racing car he will drive at the next round of the European Rallycross Championship. Meeke completed a full day at the Loheac track in northern France yesterday and returns for more running in the 600bhp car today

Facu Regalia took pole position in a thrilling GP3 qualifying session at the Nurburgring on Saturday morning. The Argentinian ART racer scored his maiden GP3 pole thanks mainly to a blinding first sector time that was over a tenth clear of his rivals.

Italy’s Giovanni Venturini scored his maiden GP3 Series race victory at Silverstone on Sunday morning, leading from start to finish from pole position despite a strong challenge from local hero Nick Yelloly. Yelloly, who started third, rocketed his Carlin machine past front row starter Alex Fontana (Jenzer) at Abbey and then tried to go around the outside of leader Venturini’s Trident machine at Village. He just about made it, but got on to the kerb on the exit, which caused his car to bounce into the air and let Venturini back ahead again.

MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo has backed Briton Cal Crutchlow to claim his maiden top-flight win this season. Crutchlow has taken two podium positions so far in 2013, including a career-best second at Le Mans, and Lorenzo reckons the Tech 3 rider has what it takes to stand on the top step

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — For only the second time in the team’s history Williams has had to resort to a paying driver as it finally confirmed that GP2 champion Pastor Maldonado will partner Rubens Barrichello next year. The first was Patrick Neve who brought backing from the Belgian brewery Belle-Vue in 1977, the maiden season for Williams Grand Prix Engineering.
