Giedo van der Garde has admitted he was close to abandoning the slick tyre run that yielded a stunning third fastest time in the first part of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. The Caterham driver was one of three, along with Marussia pairing Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton, to try slicks in qualifying. All three ended up making the cut for Q2, but van der Garde was comfortably the fastest, ending up only 0.374 seconds off pacesetter Fernando Alonso’s time

Luca Filippi appears set to get more opportunities with Bryan Herta Autosport before the end of 2013 as the team works to evaluate drivers for a possible two-car operation next year. The Italian impressed the team with both his pace and his composure during his debut outing at Mid-Ohio last weekend, and team owner Bryan Herta told AUTOSPORT that he hopes to be able to give the 27-year-old another weekend in the car. “We’ve talked to a number of drivers, but the list of guys under serious consideration is very short,” Herta said.

Luca Filippi says that team owner Bryan Herta has not issued him with any specific targets as he prepares to make his IndyCar debut at Mid-Ohio this weekend. The Italian tested with Bryan Herta Autosport at the track on Wednesday before being confirmed as Alex Tagliani’s replacement for this weekend. Jean-Eric Vergne believes he still has a chance of landing a drive with Red Bull, despite the team testing Daniel Ricciardo instead of him at Silverstone last week. Red Bull replaced Mark Webber with Ricciardo for last week’s test, where the Toro Rosso man shared the ‘race driver’ tyre duties with Sebastian Vettel. That prompted suggestions that Red Bull has narrowed down its 2014 choice to Ricciardo or 2007 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, but Vergne told AUTOSPORT at Spielberg on Sunday that he feels he is still in contention for the seat

Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting has revealed that he came close to red-flagging the British Grand Prix in the wake of the multiple tyre failures.
