Red Bull says it is under no pressure to take one of its young drivers as Sebastian Vettel’s team-mate next year, with Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso also in contention. Amid an increased focus on Red Bull’s 2014 line-up, after it emerged in Hungary that Alonso’s management held talks with its team boss Christian Horner, the reigning champion team is still considering its options. Daniel Ricciardo and Raikkonen are on the shortlist, and the team is considering Alonso a contender even though it is unclear if he is contractually available for next year.

Ross Brawn insists that there is no set timescale for him to hand Mercedes team principal responsibilities over to Paddy Lowe. Lowe started work as executive director (engineering) on June 3 this year after switching from McLaren as Brawn’s long term successor. But Brawn downplayed reports that a firm plan is in place to make a ‘soft handover’ to Lowe in six months.

Volvo will enter a factory team in next year’s V8 Supercars championship. The Swedish manufacturer’s motorsport partner Polestar will join up with V8 squad Garry Rogers Motorsport, which currently runs Holden, to field two S60s. Volvo will become the V8 series’ fifth brand, joining recent new arrivals Nissan and Mercedes alongside Holden and Ford.
