The next generation of the Superstars International Series, re-branded as the SuperTouringSeries, will be officially launched at next year’s AUTOSPORT International Show in Birmingham. The championship is currently undergoing a restructuring of its management, including the formation of a new parent company named Pan Asia Racing Enterprise, and the appointment of ex-Ferrari and Super Aguri Formula 1 team manager Daniel Audetto as the series’ new CEO. The rest of the details, including a new logo, official partners, participating teams, format, calendar and regulations will be unveiled at the NEC next January. “I am very happy to take leadership of the SuperTouringSeries dedicated to such fabulous cars,” said Audetto. “I have already had two meetings in London and Milan with 16 prestigious international teams and am confident that we will have [...]

Andrea Larini capped off a successful comeback to the Superstars International Series by winning the final race of the season at Vallelunga. Despite having not raced since the third round back in June, and this being his first meeting in an Audi Sport Italia RS5, Larini was on the pace from the outset in race two. Starting fifth, he was in second place by the end of the second lap, and quickly set about hunting down early leader Francesco Sini (Solaris Chevrolet). At the 15-minute mark Larini made his first attempt at the lead with a bold lunge into the hairpin. The move caused both he and Sini to run wide, allowing newly-crowned champion Gianni Morbidelli to sneak in front of both. Five minutes later Larini had a second shot [...]

Giovanni Berton took his first Superstars International Series pole position at Vallelunga with a stunning last-minute lap. Just when the session looked to belong to practice pace-setter Gianni Morbidelli, Berton came from nowhere to record a stunning 1m41.082 flyer just seconds before the session was over. It was his first career pole postion, and the Dinamic BMW team’s first of the season. Morbidelli, who had spent more than half of the session on top, was forced to settle for second despite also improving on his final run. He wound up just over two-tenths shy of Berton, but more than four-tenths clear of Max Mugelli – who made it two Dinamic BMWs in the top three with third, having led the way for the first 10 minutes of the session. Morbidelli’s [...]

Gianni Morbidelli and Thomas Biagi are now tied on points in the Superstars International Series, after the pair finished first and second respectively in race two at Donington Park. Biagi (Romeo Ferraris Mercedes) and Morbidelli (Audi Sport Italia RS5) started the race on the third row, both making flying starts to be first and second, Biagi leading Morbidelli, by halfway through the first lap. While Biagi was able to hold off Morbidelli in the early stages of the race, the ex-Formula 1 driver upped the ante with 15 minutes to go. A couple of minutes later Biagi finally caved under the pressure, running wide at the Melbourne hairpin, and giving Morbidelli a chance to get alongside down the front straight. Despite the Audi carrying more weight than the Mercedes, Morbidelli [...]

Luigi Ferrara finally broke through for his first Superstars International Series win of the year in race one at Donington Park. The Roma Racing Mercedes driver controlled the race, gapping fellow front-row starter Tonio Liuzzi at the start, and then doing the same again after a mid-race safety car period. The only genuine threat to Ferrara’s lead actually came from the MRT Lexus of Diego Romanini. With just a few minutes of the race remaining, Romanini’s ISF 500 suffered a spectacular engine failure at the Melbourne hairpin, coating the circuit with oil. Ferrara was the first to arrive on the scene, resulting in a half-spin. Luckily, he was the least affected of the frontrunners. Tonio Liuzzi’s Romeo Ferraris Mercedes, Gianni Morbidelli’s Audi Sport Italia RS5 and Liuzzi’s team-mate Thomas Biagi [...]

Romeo Ferraris Mercedes pair Tonio Liuzzi and Thomas Biagi set the pace in the two free practice sessions for the Superstars International Series at Donington Park. The two C63s were first and second in both sessions, Biagi leading the way in free practice one with a 1m34.917s effort, before Liuzzi lowered the benchmark in free practice two to 1m34.631s. British Touring Car Championship regular Colin Turkington made a good start to his Superstars career, finishing fourth in the first session and then third in the second session in the Scuderia Giudici BMW. Francesco Sini was another impressive performer across the two sessions, the Solaris Chevrolet driver third in FP1 and fourth in FP2, just 0.001s behind Turkington. Having won the last four races in a row, Gianni Morbidelli seemed to [...]

Gianni Morbidelli took his first Superstars International Series win of the season at Zolder, while Laurens Vanthoor stole the show with a stunning drive from last to second. Starting from pole position on a greasy circuit, Morbidelli’s only challenge was holding off the more powerful Mercedes of Tonio Liuzzi on the run down to the first corner. Having successfully held on to the lead, he then let the four-wheel-drive Audi Sport Italia RS5 do the rest of the work, pulling 2.8 seconds on the field on the first lap alone, before leading all the way to victory
