A number of drivers and teams maximised these opportunities to the utmost today, especially Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull, who controlled the race.

Marussia’s switch to Ferrari engines next season represents a “huge step forward”, according to sporting director Graeme Lowdon. The team has raced with Cosworth power since joining the Formula 1 grid as Virgin at the start of 2010, but Lowden believes Ferrari engines will help it to achieve a level playing field with its rivals.

Hyundai team principal Michel Nandan insists the i20 WRC remains on target as it moves into its final six months of development before it’s January debut on the Monte Carlo Rally. The German-based team ramped up its test programme last month, with two significant gravel tests in the south of France. All three drivers – Chris Atkinson, Juho Hanninen and Bryan Bouffier – were testing the i20 at both rough and smooth dirt venues in Chateau Lastours and Mazamet.

Pirelli is considering plans to widen the rear Formula 1 tyres for next year in a bid to ensure they can cope with the demands of the new 2014 engines. F1′s tyre supplier is pushing to finalise the specification of next year’s rubber, which will have to deal with the increased torque of the 1.6-litre V6 turbo power units.

Twin-turbo systems will become mandatory next year as part of an ongoing move to ensure parity between engine manufacturers Honda and Chevrolet in IndyCar. The decision, while not a surprise, was finally confirmed on Thursday following an IndyCar Engine Committee meeting. The timing of the change coincides with the first two-year manufacturer homologation update cycle since the series was reopened to manufacturer competition for the 2012 season
