Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position for the Italian Grand Prix, as both Ferraris edged his team-mate Nico Rosberg to deny the Mercedes Formula 1 team a front row lockout. Hamilton used Mercedes latest ‘development’ F1 engine to good effect to take pole by 0.234s from Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen at Monza. The reigning world champion failed to improve on his 1m23.397s on his second run, but both efforts were good enough for top spot. Raikkonen edged out Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel by just 0.054s on his final run to be best of the Scuderia’s two drivers in front of its home crowd. Nico Rosberg topped the timesheets in the third and final Formula 1 practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix, while his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton was third after a spin. Rosberg clocked a 1m26.031s on the medium-compound Pirelli tyre, 0.156s clear of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton, who topped second practice, ended up third after a messy session that included a spin at Turn 3 and a small mistake on his medium tyre run. Rosberg was quickest during the hard tyre runs in the opening part of the session, too, when track temperatures were 22C, nearly 30C lower than they were in FP2 on Friday. Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull were quickest by a comfortable half-second margin as Formula 1 2013 winter testing resumed at Barcelona on Tuesday morning. Even by testing standards, the initial session featured little activity at first, with most teams remaining coy and focusing on shakedowns and aero tests for the opening part of the morning

Mark Webber has declared that he will push to win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for himself and is not thinking about stepping aside for title-chasing Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel. Webber outqualified Vettel to take third on the Yas Marina grid . The Australian’s title hopes are extremely remote now that he trails leader Vettel by 73 points with only 75 still available, whereas Vettel is 13 points ahead of rival Fernando Alonso at the head of the standings

Jenson Button admitted that it would have been a major embarrassment had he taken Sebastian Vettel and himself out of the Singapore Grand Prix behind the safety car.
