Anreus Cops Chaotic Canadian CTC

Week Four has arrived and the Classic Lotus Grand Prix was at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, better known as “Mosport”. The circuit is one of the few on the schedule that was actually a fixture on the real Formula 1 ’70s era calendar, and is one of the favorites tracks for the CTC members. To prove this fact, there was thirteen official race starts through the week that ended the first month of the championship. The list of winning racers is as follows: David Wormald, Marcel Penzkofer, Tapani Linnaluoto, Daniel Pedrosa, Gernot Fritsche, Michel Dudognon, Mattias Anreus, Paolo Accurso, Gary Larsen and Arto Ihamäki.

On Sunday, four official races took place, with one before the SoF race main event (that had two splits), and another one immediately after. For the SoF race, the two splits had 26 and 25 registered simracers, respectively. The second split was won by Gary Larsen (BS Fabrication) and a podium with Juha Kiili (2nd place) and Adnan Dizdarevic, from Williams, coming as third.

The first split started with Linnaluoto on the pole position, his second one on a SoF race day, followed by Anreus on the front row. Fristche had the third place and shared the second row with teammate Julien Flouret. It has been a tough for the the Lotus JPS drivers to keep the domain on this season beginning.

The chaos after Turn 1 produced different accidents on the same time.

A very complicated race start was seen, setting the stage for a complicated race. As soon as the ground effect cars reached the first turn, Niki Kreese sailed off the track and made contact with the tire barrier, but made his way back on track. At the same time, the Ferrari of Juho Raina collided with David Wormald’s Arrows’, taking both of them off track from eighth and ninth places. Wormald got back to the pits and repaired his car to finish the race later, while Raina had to take off the virtual seatbelts and call it a day. This incident also involved Arto Ihamäki, Raina’s teammate, who couldn’t avoid the incident. As a snowball coming down the mountain, the incidents kept happening and Ihamäki (10th place) was pushed into Penzkofer’s car, forcing him to quit the race. Sam Dobie (15th) and Thiago Izequiel (20th) came very close to wrecking as well, having to effectively park their cars to avoid the mess. The ones who had started on the outside line, below the top 10, passed through the yellow flag sector with no bigger problems. Graham Daly, who started from the pitlane, perhaps made the wisest choice of all by not placing his car on the grid!

Meanwhile, up front, Paolo Accurso had overtaken Floret and Fritsche, going up to the third place while Anreus chased Linnaluoto’s lead car. During the third lap, Marko Kiika spun his Ferrari out of ninth place and had contact with a following Gregor Thomson. It wasn’t a good day for the Ferrari representatives as Thomson was forced to leave the race on the seventh lap, after a collision with Kresse, who flipped his car many times, flying out to hit the debris fence and retired. With the retirement of Daniel Pedrosa and Thomas Torp there were now just 20 racers on the track.

A good battle developed between Kiika (Ferrari), Izequiel (Tyrrell), Ihamaki (Brabham) and Cooke (behind).

The next one to leave the race would be Izequiel, who had reached the intermediary positions and was battling against Antti Lepistö and Kiika, running in 16th place. With a slight mistake from Lepistö, Izequiel managed to overtake and reach the Finn’s Ferrari on Lap 10. Izequiel kept going forward, passing Tony Kloosterman, who lost two spots as Kiika followed the Brazilian sim racer’s Tyrrell as they tried to decrease the gap with Mark Pickford. Pickford would soon get to Barry West’s Ligier, having the 11th place and leaving it to West to defend himself against the onrushing Brazilian until they crashed on Lap 19.  Izequiel was launched off the racetrack, going for the woods, being the eighth driver to leave the competition, while West managed to get back to the race and would later finish on the 16th position. Kloosterman also retired later, on the 18th place.

On lap 21, Espeland was being overtaken by Sam Dobie, after a battle that lasted four laps. Dobie was now in eighth position and would finish the race there with his rival coming right behind. Julien Flouret was trading paints with his teammate, Fritsche, for the fourth place. The Lotus JPS representatives’ duel would last until the last moment, as they finished in the top five with a gap of just .3s between them. The winner was Anreus, who managed to lead for 31 laps after chasing Linnaluoto, leaving the Finn for the second place, six seconds behind. Paolo Accurso wrapped-up the podium. And what about Daly? A very good, patient race gave him the 10th place, after starting from the pitlane. A good strategy and an even better outcome!

Chegando na 4ª semana, o Classic Lotus Grand Prix esteve no Canadá, lar do antigo autódromo chamado de Mosport, hoje rebatizado como Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. O traçado é um dos poucos no calendário que realmente serviram de palco para corridas de Fórmula 1 durante os anos 70, sendo também um dos favoritos entre os membros do CTC. Prova disso foram as 13 largadas oficiais que houveram durante a semana que fechava o primeiro mês de competições oficiais, simbolizando o ínicio da 2ª parte do campeonato. A lista de vencedores durante a semana Canadense, foi: David Wormald, Marcel Penzkofer, Tapani Linnaluoto, Daniel Pedrosa, Gernot Fritsche, Michel Dudognon, Mattias Anreus, Paolo Accurso, Gary Larsen e Arto Ihamäki.

Apenas no domingo, foram 4 corridas oficiais. Uma delas antecedeu o evento principal que teve duas divisões e a última veio logo após estas. O evento principal, dividido em duas corridas, teve 26 pilotos na divisão 1 e 25 pilotos na divisão 2, que foi vencido por Gary Larsen (BS Fabrication) e teve no pódio Juha Kiili (2º) e Adnan Dizdarevic, da Williams, em 3º.

A corrida principal, que contou com o SoF mais alto, começou com Linnaluoto na pole position, sua segunda em uma corrida de domingo, seguido de Anreus, também na 1ª fila. Fristche ficou com a 3ª colocação e dividiu a 2ª fila com Julien Flouret. Tem sido difícil para os pilotos da Lotus JPS manterem o domínio neste começo de temporada.

Uma complicada largada foi vista, dando início ao que seria um prova um tanto turbulenta. Logo na curva 1, Niki Kresse saiu da pista e entrou na caixa de brita, conseguindo passar por ela e retornar ao traçado já sem sua 6ª posição. Simultaneamente, Juho Raina colidiu sua Ferrari com a Arrows de David Wormald, levando os pilotos que ocupavam a 8ª e 9ª posição para fora da pista. Wormald conseguiu reparar seu carro, mas agora correria apenas para terminar a prova, feito que não poderia ser completado por Raina, que abandonou em seguida. O acidente acabou por envolver também Arto Ihamäki, companheiro de equipe de Raina, que por muito pouco não escapou da situação. Como uma bola de neve descendo a montanha, Ihamäki (10º) foi levado a se chocar com Marcel Penzkofer (11º), que se tornou um muro para Antti Lepistö, que também atingiu Penzkofer, forçando o piloto a abandonar a prova. Sam Dobie (15º) e Thiago Izequiel (20º) chegaram próximos da batida e tiveram de estacionar na pista para evitar o problema à frente. Os que haviam largado na fila de fora, abaixo do top10, conseguiram passar sem maiores problemas pela bandeira amarela local. Graham Daly, que largou do pitlane, fez a aposta certa ao não alinhar seu carro no grid.

Enquanto isso, entre os líderes, Paolo Accurso havia ultrapassado Floret e Fristche, subindo para a 3ª posição. Anreus perseguia Linnaluoto, que continuava a liderar a prova. Durante a 3ª volta, Marko Kiikka rodou sua Ferrari enquanto ocupava a 9ª colocação e sofreu um leve toque de Gregor Thomson, que vinha imediatamente atrás. Não era um bom dia para os representantes da equipe Italiana e nem para Thomson, que abandonaria logo em seguida, durante a 7ª volta, após um toque com Kresse que capotou diversas vezes e voou em direção às grades de proteção, deixando a prova também. Agora já são 7 pilotos a saírem da prova mais cedo, contando também com Daniel Pedrosa e Thomas Torp.

O próximo a abandonar a prova seria Thiago Izequiel, que havia alcançado o pelotão intermediário e disputava com Antti Lepistö e Kiika, na 16ª posição. Com um pequeno erro de Lepistö, Izequiel ultrapassa e passa a disputar diretamente com o Finlandês da Ferrari, que perde sua posição na volta 10. Izequiel continua a subir passando por Tony Kloosterman, que cai mais uma posição enquanto Kiika segue a Tyrrell do piloto Brasileiro, em busca de Mark Pickford. Porém, Pickford consegue ultrapassar a Ligier de Barry West, que ocupava a 11ª posição e West agora se defendia do Brasileiro, até a volta 19, quando os dois se chocaram. Izequiel é catapultado para fora da pista, sendo o 8º piloto a abandonar, mas West conseguiu seguir na prova e terminaria na 16ª posição. Kloosterman também sairia da corrida mais tarde, ficando em 18º.

Enquanto isso, durante a volta 21, Espeland era ultrapassado por Sam Dobie, após uma disputa que durou 4 voltas. Dobie era agora o 8º colocado e terminaria nessa mesma posição, com seu rival vindo logo atrás, em 9º. Julien Flouret dividia curvas com Fristche, pela 4ª colocação. A briga dos pilotos da Lotus JPS duraria até o final da prova, com uma diferença de menos de 3 décimos entre os dois e sem mudança de posição. O vencedor foi Anreus, que conseguiu liderar por 31 voltas e após disputar com Linnaluoto, deixou o Finlandês com a segunda posição, 6 segundos atrás. Paolo Accurso completou o pódio. E Graham Daly? Terminou em 10º após uma corrida de paciência, largando do pitlane. Uma boa aposta.
