James Edens’ flag-to-flag win at Volusia Speedway Park on Monday made him the first three-time winner of the 2020 iRacing World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Car World Championship season. It also made him just the third driver in series history to crack five career victories in iRacing’s premier sprint car series, putting him in good company: only 2018 champion Tim Ryan (six) and 2019 title winner Alex Bergeron (11) have more.
Just how tough is it to win in the series? Only nine drivers have ever done it, and of that group, five haven’t yet managed it more than once. That group ranges from Adam Elby, who took the checkered flag in the series’ debut at Eldora Speedway in 2018, to Braden Eyler, the series’ most recent first-time winner after he held off Edens and Bergeron at Knoxville Speedway under a month ago. The first two seasons saw five winners apiece, and 2020 seems to be on track to equal that mark thanks to four different winners in the first four events.
