iRacing World of Outlaws Sprint Car Preview: Lernerville

The halfway point of the 2020-21 iRacing World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Car World Championship sees the series visit one of the most unique tracks on the schedule. Lernerville Speedway, and its defining lack of a retaining wall on the outside of most of the track, will introduce the harshest consequences of the season for drivers who push the outside line just a little too far on Monday night.

Lernerville’s spot on the calendar plays directly into the hands of points leader Hayden Cardwell, who will look to increase his advantage in the standings at one of his favorite tracks. Cardwell’s path to the iRacing World of Outlaws Late Model World Championship ran directly through Lernerville, where he swept both races at the track this summer, and he’ll look to match that success behind the wheel of a sprint car.

But to do it, he’s going to have to go through two-time series champion Alex Bergeron and James Edens, the two Lernerville winners and top championship contenders from last season. Bergeron became the first two-time winner of the season last week at Eldora, closing the gap to Cardwell to just five points coming into this race. Edens has been slower out of the gate than usual, currently sitting seventh in the standings, but remains one of the most feared drivers by the competition every week.

Beyond Cardwell, Bergeron, and Edens, a handful of other drivers had strong results last season at Lernerville and will be looking to replicate the feat tonight. Lewis Hewett’s runner-up finish from the first-ever Lernerville race for the series would be a welcome result for the Australian this year as he looks to climb out of 27^th place in the standings. On the other hand, Tyler Schell’s second place finish in the second Lernerville race was a good indicator of things to come, as the Pennsylvania native’s string of consistent results has him sixth in the championship. Scoring his first career World Championship win this time out would further establish him as this season’s breakout driver.
