Matt Caruana sweeps Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series event at VIRginia International Raceway North
July 25th, 2025 by Justin Melillo
Two weeks after having a win stripped away due to penalty, Matt Caruana bounced back with a pair of wins at VIRginia International Raceway’s North Course on Thursday night.
The Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series is now at the halfway mark of the 2025 season, and now Caruana has four wins among those six races. From the pole position in both 15-minute races, Caruana held off Aaron Vazquezz and Felipe Cabrera Loyola for all 22 laps to take a perfect night home.

Caruana, Vazquezz, and Cabrera were the class of the field, able to pull away from the pack in both races. Defense was the name of the game, and Caruana mostly played it perfectly. In the opening race, Caruana never got passed, leading all 11 laps enroute to the win and pole for the second race. Vazquezz gave it a shot in the second race, with just over three minutes to go, but overdrove it slightly, allowing for Caruana to get back by and lead every lap once more.
“I’m absolutely sweating,” Caruana said moments after winning the second race of the night. “Aaron (Vazquezz) went for a move a lap earlier than I thought he would, which, fair enough. He went a little bit deep, unfortunately, and also lost another position, which is unfortunate. I knew Aaron would want to get that P2 back, so I sort of just focused on what was ahead of me, tried to make no mistakes, and I sort of just had it from there.”

Three events are complete and three more remain. Watkins Glen International is up next, after that is another trip to VIRginia International Raceway, and then it all concludes with a finale at Circuit of the Americas. The Time Attack for WGI opens up at the beginning of August.

Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series Points Standings after Race #6 at VIRginia International Raceway:
- Matt J Caruana | United Kingdom | 195 points
- Aaron Vazquezz | Spain | -19
- Ayden Young | United States | -28
- Felipe Cabrera Loyola | Chile | -37
- Leo Ovtcharov | United States | -56
- Leo Brown | United Kingdom | -59
- Matt Bussa | United States | -66
- Cameron Martineau | United States | -70
- Cade Middleton | United States | -78
- Victor Wolfsohn | Denmark | -84
Caruana extends his points lead over Vazquezz leaving VIR North. Ayden Young falls to third. Victor Wolfsohn, a winner last week, did not qualify for this week and falls to 10th. Winning the championship, like Victor Miranda did last season, is a fine accolade, but placing inside the top-three is the main goal for all competing drivers, as that is the same prize across the board.
The top three point scorers at season’s end will receive a 3 Day Racing School and compete in a shootout later this year for a 2026 Skip Barber Race Series seat. 1 Day Racing School certificates will be awarded to fourth and fifth in points, as well as the Hard Charger Award winner from each race, and all of the qualifiers for each race will earn a one-time $200 credit towards an SBRS course.
Next up for the series is Watkins Glen International, specifically the Boot layout of the venue. This track returns for the first time since the 2022 season, those races won by Nicolas Mateo and Matt Adams.
The Hot Lap Qualifier is active from Friday, August 1st, at 12 a.m. ET to Sunday, August 3rd at 11:59 p.m. ET.
The entry fee for each Hot Lap Qualifier is $20, and the top 20 drivers on the Time Attack leaderboard will be invited to run each race. They’ll also get to take part in an open test with Skip Barber Racing School instructors on hand to provide feedback.
The race itself is scheduled for Thursday, August 7th, once again at 7 p.m. ET. It will be live on iRacing.com/live and across all of iRacing’s social media channels.
