The second half of the 2025 Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series season took the top-20 qualified drivers for this round to Upstate New York for a pair of 15-minute races on Tuesday night. Coming into the night, Matt Caruana had four of the six races wins so far in the series, sweeping in the first round at Sebring and the third round at VIRginia. The even rounds have proved to be Caruana’s kryptonite, so far, even though he did cross the line in first in the second race at Lime Rock before a post-race penalty.

This week belonged to Aaron Vazquezz, who claimed the sweep at Watkins Glen International. Vazquezz won by multiple seconds in the opening race, but the second was much tougher. Even after “securing” the victory off of the final corner, his celebration may have started a little too early, and a little too excitedly, as his FIA F4 drifted over into the grass. Ayden Young nearly got back by to take his second win of the season, but Vazquezz was able to regain control just in time as he crossed the line, placing his face in his hands moments later.

Vazquezz took the pole position over a newcomer to the series, Ghiless Jeanney from France, and the pair led the field to the green flag for the first 15-minute race of the day. From third, Caruana made his way to the top of the board, leading two of the nine laps, ultimately falling back to fifth by the end of the race.

The battle for second was so intense that Vazquezz was able to check out completely, winning by over three-and-a-half seconds. Victor Wolfsohn, in his return to the series, wound up finishing third, right behind Leo Ovtcharov, who won the battle of the best of the rest. Jeanney fell back to finish seventh in their debut. 14 of the 20 cars would finish the opening race. That would not be the same case in the second race.

Immediately, things got completely jumbled, as the field crashed into Turn 1 on the opening lap of the second lap. Caruana caught a piece of it, losing multiple spots, but managed to avoid any major damage. The calamity didn’t stop there. Multiple crashes later, the field had been whittled down to only nine cars. This was huge for Caruana, who managed to battle back to a podium finish.

Ahead of him, three drivers were locked into an intense battle for the win. Vazquezz, looking for the sweep, was under fire this time from Ovtcharov and Young, the trio swapping the top spot multiple times as the laps wound down. Eventually it came down to Vazquezz versus Young, as Ovtcharov was relegated off the podium behind Caruana. As they rounded the final corner for the final time, Vazquezz was on his way to take the win. Vazquezz began to celebrate, and his car suddenly moved into the grass in between the frontstretch and the barrier. Vazquezz got back under control, holding on to the win by just four hundredths.

The Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series Champion will ultimately be determined by the total number of points earned during the season, excluding the lowest two individual race scores which will be deducted to determine the final points (includes zeros, disqualifications, as well as races a driver did not participate in). Points are awarded in both 15 minute sessions.

With only two events remaining, the drops will start to be factored in. As it stands, Caruana would drop the second Lime Rock race, the one which he was penalized in, as well as the opening round at Watkins Glen this week. Vazquezz currently would drop both races from Lime Rock Park, while Young would drop the opening races at Lime Rock Park and VIRginia International Raceway North. Victor Wolfsohn, the winner in the opening race at Lime Rock, did not participate at VIR, and would drop those zero point rounds, which would move him up from his current place in ninth all the way up to sixth.

Two events remain, the next one at VIR Full in two weeks, and the finale at Circuit of the Americas next month.

The Hot Lap Qualifier for VIR Full is active from Friday, August 15th, at 12 a.m. ET to Sunday, August 17th at 11:59 p.m. ET.

The entry fee for each Hot Lap Qualifier is $20, and the top 20 drivers on the Time Attack leaderboard will be invited to run each race. They’ll also get to take part in an open test with Skip Barber Racing School instructors on hand to provide feedback.

The race itself is scheduled for Thursday, August 21st, once again at 7 p.m. ET. It will be live on iRacing.com/live and across all of iRacing’s social media channels.
