Battle of the European Titans at Summit Point

The opening week of iRacing’s European MX5 Cup was a tough act to follow but the competition was even hotter in Week 2. From Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway, the series moved to Summit Point Raceway, where the Full Course’s long front straightaway offers great drafting possibilities and its highly technical Carousel section places a premium on handling. With the series featuring races of 25 minutes duration, races at Summit Point would be 18 laps.

Thursday evening’s feature race saw the entire field qualify within one second of Aday Coba Lopez, whose splendid time of 1:22.655 earned him the pole position for the second week in a row. In contrast, Week 1 winner Jesus Sicilia was unlucky in qualifying and started 23rd and last place. Kamil Franczak made his debut in the Euro MX5 Cup from second place on the grid, just one tenth of a second behind Coba Lopez with Tamás Szabó completing the top three on the grid with a time of 1:22.812.

A great start Franczak saw him immediately try to take the lead on the outside through the 180 degree Turn One, but good positioning enabled Coba Lopez to maintain first place. Further back, Kristian Kwietniewski made the pass on Adria Perez Soler for 6th place in Turn One, while Dave Gelink kept to the inside in Turn Two to fend-off Sylvain Pommarede’s bid for tenth place.

Elsewhere, the Iberica Racing Team tandem of Pablo Lopez and Danilo Jacobs got past Sven Deml while French sim racers Jeremy Bouteloup and Evan Maillard enjoyed some great side-by-side action throughout an exciting — but clean — first lap.

Running in third place, Szabó had a good view of Franczak completing a successful pass on Coba Lopez in Turn One on the second lap, while Deml managed to pass the Iberica tandem after a couple of laps to reclaim 13th place.
After some early contact, Adria Perez Soler dropped from 6th to P9 with Pommarede on his tail and looking to advance. Maillard would get caught-up in a subsequent Soler/Pommarede sandwich, with Deml suffering damage in the follow-up. Maillard and Deml continued, but Soler and Pommarede ended-up at the back of the field.

Headed by Franczak, a lead train of ten drivers succeeded in breaking away from the following pack. Sicilia worked his way up from last to join the following group which included Deml, Lopez and Jacobs, while the unlucky Ramon Valcarcel gave up 14th position after blowing his engine.

Although fierce, the battle at the front saw few position changes. Not so the competition for 9th place where Lap 11 saw the ambitious Antoine Higelin try to pass Bouteloup and Gelink on the main straight. Unfortunately, Higelin missed his breaking point and his “hero move” ended-up in the Turn One sand trap and left his competition untouched.

Jesus Sicilia, who started 23rd, fought to get to 10th followed by Pablo Lopez in 11th and Sven Deml in 12th where they all finished.

As the final laps approached, Franczak was still leading but the pressure was building from Coba Lopez and Szabo, with Giuseppe Curri, David Willams, Kristian Kwietniewski Gelink, Bouteloup and Maillard ready to take advantage of the slightest mistake. Out of touch with the lead group, but having driven an inspired race nonetheless, Sicilia ran in P10 followed by Lopez and Deml.

Heading into the final lap, the nine driver lead train ran at full speed down the front straight but, unwilling to take a chance that would lose them their hard-win positions, nobody made a committed overtaking attempt into the first turn. It seemed that Coba Lopez was content to take another second place (or did he have something left after all?) while Szabo held third, still followed by Curri, Willams, Kwietniewski, Gelink, Bouteloup and Maillard.

Down the Chute, through the Carousel and back up the hill, Franczak was in front with Coba Lopez in his mirrors. Into the final turn, Franczak took a very tight defensive line to the inside. Lucky for him, the last turn offers a lot of room; unluckily for him, Coba Lopez took a late apex, enabling him to get to the inside onto the final staightaway with a slightly higher corner exit speed.

It all came down to the position of the finish line – ten feet closer to the final turn and the race would have been Franczak’s.  But it wasn’t. In a photo finish, Coba Lopez crossed the line first by no more than a coat or two of virtual paint!

“At the end on the last lap, I just had a chance,” said Coba Lopez. “Go very close to the penultimate corner, make a hint inward, then accelerate before Kamil and pray to get first to the finish line. It was incredible.”

After leading one lap at the start and overtaking in the final meter, Coba Lopez took the win by just 0.013s  from Franczak, who was happy about his second place. Szabo completed the podium in front of Giuseppe, Williams, Kristian, Gelink and Bouteloup with Sicilia completing the top 10 of this stunning race.

Thursday’s second split saw Ruben Fanarraga, Sam McAleer and Ion Ander Zugasti on the podium, while the week’s other noteworthy winners included Sergio Gurdiel Ferreiro, Richard Borchers, Krisztian Mikle and Sabrina Gramß.

Thursday’s win, coupled with last week’s runner-up finish, enabled points leader Coba Lopez to create a gap to the rest of the top five in the standings. But, as this was but the second week in a 12 week series, a top 20 finish is still possible for everyone since only the scores from their ten best weeks count for the championship. However, those who have yet to begin amassing good points had better get started during this week of sim racing at Okayama.

Les européens enflamment Summit Point dans une bataille des titans !

Une photo finish aura été nécessaire pour départager Aday Coba-Lopez et Kamil Franczak à Summit Point.

La première semaine de compétition en Coupe iRacing MX5 Europe aura été disputée mais ce n’était rien en comparaison à la deuxième ! Après le Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway, le championnat a pris la direction du Summit Point Raceway – version longue – une piste avec une longue ligne droite offrant des possibilités d’aspiration importantes mais aussi une partie technique – le Carousel – où une bonne adhérence est indispensable. Les courses du championnat durant 25 minutes, l’épreuve de Summit Point se déroulait donc sur 18 tours. La course du jeudi soir voyait l’intégralité des participants qualifiés dans la même seconde qu’Aday Coba-Lopez, qui, avec un chrono de 1:22.655 a décroché la pole position pour la deuxième semaine consécutive. A l’inverse, le vainqueur de la première semaine, Jesus Sicilia, était malchanceux lors des qualifications puisqu’il s’élançait 23e et dernier sur la grille de départ. Pour ses débuts en Coupe iRacing MX5 Europe, Kamil Franczak échouait à seulement un dixième de seconde de Coba-Lopez et devançait Tamás Szabó auteur d’un temps de 1:22.812.

“Les temps lors de la séance qualificative étaient tous très proches, ce qui augurait d’une compétition féroce dans le peloton,” notait Patrik Flis.

Grâce à un excellent départ, Franczak se portait à la hauteur de Coba-Lopez afin de tenter un dépassement à l’extérieur du premier virage – une courbe à 180 degrés –, mais une bonne trajectoire permettait à Coba-Lopez de conserver son bien. Plus loin dans le peloton, Kristian Kwietniewski se défaisait d’Adria Perez Soler pour le gain de la 6e place au virage  1, alors que Dave Gelink conservait la ligne intérieure au deuxième virage et résistait à la tentative de Sylvain Pommarede de s’emparer de la dixième position.

Par ailleurs, le duo de l’équipe Iberica Racing Team composé de Pablo Lopez et Danilo Jacobs dépassait Sven Deml alors que les  joueurs français Jeremy Bouteloup et Evan Maillard s’affrontaient portières contre portières lors d’un premier tour palpitant mais toutefois très propre. Troisième, Szabó observait Franczak déborder Coba-Lopez au virage 1 dès l’entame du deuxième tour alors que Deml réussissait à prendre l’avantage sur les pilotes Iberica Racing Team pour le gain de la treizième place. Après quelques contacts en début de course, Adria Perez Soler passait de la sixième position à la neuvième et voyait Pommarede se faire pressant derrière lui. Maillard était par la suite pris en sandwich par le duo Soler/Pommarede piégeant également Deml qui subissait des dégâts dans la manœuvre. Si Maillard et Deml pouvaient continuer sans mal, les courses de Soler et Pommarede se terminaient en fond de classement.

Emmené par Franczak, un train de dix pilotes s’échappait du reste du peloton. Sicilia remontait depuis la dernière position sur la grille et revenait dans ce groupe incluant Deml, Lopez et Jacobs alors que le malchanceux Ramon Valcarcel était contraint à l’abandon après une casse de son moteur.

Bien que féroce, la bataille en tête ne voyait que peu de changements de position. Cela n’était pas le cas de la lutte pour la neuvième place, marquée par une manœuvre ambitieuse d’Antoine Higelin au onzième tour. Alors qu’il tentait un dépassement sur Bouteloup et Gelink dans la ligne droite, Higelin ratait son point de freinage et sa « manœuvre de héros » se transformait en une sortie de route dans le bac à graviers du virage 1… Parti vingt-troisième, Jesus Sicilia réussissait une belle performance pour se diriger vers la dixième position devant Pablo Lopez et Sven Deml.

Alors que les derniers tours approchaient, le leader Franczak voyait Coba-Lopez et Szabo lui mettre la pression avec, derrière eux, Giuseppe Curri, David Willams, Kristian Kwietniewski Gelink, Jeremy Bouteloup et Evan Maillard prêts à tout pour profiter de la moindre erreur. Décroché du peloton de tête mais auteur d’une course solide néanmoins, Sicilia était toujours en dixième position, suivi de près par Lopez et Deml.

La combinaison des MX5, des meilleurs « sim racers » du monde et de la longue ligne droite du Summit Point Motorsports Park ont offert un spectacle extraordinaire.

A l’entame du dernier tour, les neuf pilotes qui composaient le groupe de tête roulaient à tombeau ouvert, sans pour autant tenter de manœuvre désespérée qui auraient pu mettre en péril un bon résultat. Ainsi personne ne tentait de dépassement dans le premier virage et Coba-Lopez semblait se contenter d’une nouvelle deuxième place (en gardait-il sous le pied ?) devant Szabo, toujours suivi par Curri, Willams, Kwietniewski, Gelink, Bouteloup et Maillard.

Négociant la descente après le virage 3 puis le Carousel avant d’entamer ensuite la remontée, Franczak était toujours en tête mais voyait Coba-Lopez se décaler sur la gauche et sur la droite dans ses rétroviseurs. Dans l’ultime virage, le leader Franczak prenait une trajectoire très intérieure. Heureusement pour lui, le dernier virage offre une portion bitumée derrière le vibreur, malheureusement pour lui Coba-Lopez prenait une trajectoire plus large lui permettant de plonger à l’intérieur avant d’entamer la ligne droite des stands avec une meilleure vitesse de pointe.

Tout se jouait donc sur la ligne d’arrivée – trois mètres plus tôt Franczak aurait pu s’imposer… mais ce ne fut pas le cas. Après consultation de la photo finish, Coba-Lopez coupait la ligne en tête avec une roue d’avance sur son adversaire.

“J’ai accéléré avant Kamil et j’ai prié pour franchir la ligne d’arriver en premier. C’était incroyable,” se réjouissait Aday Coba-Lopez. “A la fin du dernier tour, j’ai seulement eu une chance : me rapprocher au maximum de Kamil dans l’avant-dernier virage, feindre de passer à l’intérieur puis accélérer avant lui et espérer couper la ligne en tête. C’est tout simplement incroyable.”

Voici ce que treize millièmes de secondes (ou 0.013s) représentent sur la piste…

Après avoir mené le premier tour et les derniers mètres de la course, Coba-Lopez s’imposait avec treize millièmes de secondes d’avance sur Franczak, tout de même ravi de sa deuxième position. Szabo complétait le podium et devançait Giuseppe, Williams, Kristian, Gelink, Bouteloup et Sicilia, qui bouclait le top-10 d’une course exceptionnelle.

La deuxième course du jeudi voyait Ruben Fanarraga, Sam McAleer et Ion Ander Zugasti sur le podium, alors que les autres vainqueurs de la semaine à retenir étaient Sergio Gurdiel Ferreiro, Richard Borchers, Krisztian Mikle et Sabrina Gramß.

Avec sa victoire de jeudi couplée avec une deuxième place la semaine dernière, Coba-Lopez s’empare de la position de leader du championnat et creuse l’écart avec le reste de ses poursuivants. Cependant, comme ce n’est que la deuxième semaine de compétition sur les douze que comptent la série, une contre performance est encore possible pour tout le monde puisque seules les dix meilleures semaines sont prises en compte dans l’optique du championnat. Toutefois, ceux qui doivent encore marquer de gros points auront l’obligation de bien figurer cette semaine sur la piste d’Okayama.
