Franczak’s Revenge

Franczak fended-off the challenges of Maillard and Coba Lopez to take the win at Okayama.

After a stunning photo finish race at Summit Point Raceway that saw Aday Coba Lopez nip Kamil Franczak, Round 3 of the European MX5 Cup moved to the Okayama International Circuit’s “full” course.  In addition to the challenges presented by the 2.3 mile, 11 turn circuit, drivers faced a new “wrinkle” in the form of updates to the fixed chassis setups on their MX5s.  Clearly, drivers who could adapt quickly to the new setups would have the best chance to be atop the running order when the checkered flag waved.

Coba Lopez didn’t seem to suffer any problems with the new setup, as he posted a qualifying time of 1:46.876 to (again) edge Franczak in the battle for pole position. Evan Maillard, who seems more comfortable in the Global MX5 with every passing day, Jesus Sicilia and Tamás Szabó completed the top five qualifiers. Meanwhile, the grid featured a new addition in the form of Johan Lespinasse who would start from 12th spot in this 14 lap race.

In a repeat of last week’s start, Coba Lopez was a little slow off the line, enabling Franczak to grab the lead into the first turn. Behind Franczak some hectic side-by-side action saw Maillard emerge in second place ahead of Sicilia, Szabó and Jeremy Bouteloup with Coba Lopez falling back to sixth place.  Sixth fastest qualifier Kristian Kwietniewski suffered damage on the opening lap and came on to pit lane for repairs.

Having run up front in the opening rounds, Sven Deml started 23rd and last after a problematic qualifying session.  His difficulties continued in the race when he tangled with Sam McAleer and Ramon Valcarcel on the run to the Turn 4 hairpin in an incident that spelled the end of the race for the threesome.

After this incident the race stabilized, with several of pockets of two and three car battles throughout the entire field.  However, for the first half of the race most of the sim racers appeared content to maintain position while saving their tires.

By the midpoint of the race, Franczak, Maillard, Sicilia, Szabó, Coba Lopez and Bouteloup had broken free of a fierce battle for seventh place featuring Dave Gelink, Pablo López, Sylvain Pommarede, Giuseppi Curri and Adria Perez Soler.  Coming on to the main straight to complete lap 7 however, Curri mysteriously  slowed.  The closely-following Perez Soler had nowhere to go, and clobbered Curri’s MX5, leaving just 18 cars left from the 23 starters.

Up front, meanwhile, Sicilia was turning-up the pressure on Maillard in the battle for second place with Coba Lopez following at a discrete distance and looking to take advantage of any mistakes by the top three.  Sure enough, Sicilia and Maillard came together in the double left hander with Sicilia striking the barrier.  Although Sicilia initially tried to continue, it soon became apparent his car had suffered terminal damage and he became the sixth and final driver to retire from the race.

With five laps remaining the race appeared to have boiled-down to a battle between Franczak, Maillard and Coba Lopez for the win.  Behind the front trio came two  more groups of three cars fighting for fourth and seventh.  While Bouteloup, Szabó and Gelink squabbled for P4, the battle for P7 featured López, Pommarede and Danilo Jacobs. Although Pommarede was doing his beet to pass López, he needed to keep an eye out for Lopez (Jacobs’ teammate) right behind him.  Indeed, Jacobs eventually got around Pommarede only for the Frenchman to reclaim the position and, ultimately, come home in eighth place between López and Jacobs.

Heading into the final two laps, Franczak and Maillard pulled-out a slight gap as Coba Lopez slipped from the lead draft.  With Maillard attacking for the lead, Franczak began adopting defensive lines and, as a result, Coba Lopez was able to re-engage with the leaders heading into the final lap. Things were hearing up behind the leaders as well, as Szabó and Gelink traded some paint while jousting for fifth position with Gelink recovering from a ride through the dirt and continuing in sixth.

Onto the main straight for the final time and Franczak crossed the line .261s clear of Maillard with Coba Lopez just behind to complete the podium ahead of a lonely Bouteloup with Szabó and Gelink rounding-out the top six.  Further back, came López, Pommarede and Jacobs with Ion Ander Zugasti taking the final spot in the top ten.

The results produced few changes in the top 10 of the championship standings, apart from Sicilia falling from fourth to 12th. The top 3 remains the same with while Lespinasse making his first appearance in the top 20.

Round Four sees the European MX5 Cup competitors challenging the Daytona International Speedway’s “r-oval” on the world’s best pc racing game.  Combining the infield road course with all but a few hundred yards of the 2.5 mile superspeedway, Daytona figures to be a “draft track” where there will be a great chance of another sim racing photo finish.  Then again, the tricky Bus Stop Chicane could well mix things up.

Kamil Franczak a su résister à Maillard et Coba-Lopez pour s’imposer à Okayama

Après une course exceptionnelle lors de la troisième manche de la Coupe iRacing MX5 Europe sur le Summit Point Raceway – une course conclue par une photo finish entre Aday Coba-Lopez et Kamil Franczak – les concurrents se sont donnés rendez-vous sur le circuit d’Okayama, utilisé dans sa version la plus longue. Outre le défi représenté par les 11 virages et les 3,703 km du tracé, les pilotes ont eu droit à une mise à jour des réglages adoptés pour ces courses « fixed », c’est-à-dire sans possibilité de modifier le setup de base de leur MX5. Par conséquent, les pilotes qui auront su s’adapter rapidement au nouveau comportement de leur monture, auront pu franchir la ligne d’arrivée aux avant-postes.

Coba-Lopez n’a pas eu l’air de connaître de problème pour s’adapter à ces nouveaux réglages puisqu’il a réalisé le meilleur temps des qualifications en 1:46.876, une nouvelle fois devant Franczak. Evan Maillard, qui semble de plus en plus à l’aise à bord de sa MX5 au fil des jours, Jesus Sicilia et Tamás Szabó complétaient le top-5. A noter l’arrivée d’un nouveau participant en la personne de Johan Lespinasse qui s’est qualifié douzième pour cette course de 14 tours.

Tout comme la semaine dernière, Coba-Lopez effectuait un départ moyen ce qui laissait Franczak s’emparer de la première place au premier virage. Derrière lui, après une manœuvre parfaitement maîtrisée, Maillard se retrouvait en deuxième position devant Sicilia, Szabó et Jeremy Bouteloup. Les grands perdants de ce départ étaient Coba-Lopez, sixième, et Kristian Kwietniewski, contraint de rentrer au stand pour réparer des dégâts à la fin du premier tour.

Aux avant-postes lors des deux premières manches de la saison, Sven Deml s’élançait 23e et dernier après avoir connu une séance qualificative difficile. Ses ennuis continuaient en course lorsqu’il s’accrochait avec Sam McAleer et Ramon Valcarcel à l’épingle. Un incident qui mettait fin à la course des trois hommes.

Après cet accident, l’épreuve devenait plus calme, et voyait plusieurs petits paquets de deux ou trois voitures en bataille dans le peloton. Durant toute la première partie de course, la majorité des pilotes semblaient se contenter de leur position tout en gérant leurs gommes.

A la mi-course, le top-6 composé de Franczak, Maillard, Sicilia, Szabó, Coba-Lopez et Bouteloup avait pris quelques longueurs d’avance sur leurs poursuivants alors en bagarre pour la septième position. Un groupe où l’on retrouvait Dave Gelink, Pablo López, Sylvain Pommarede, Giuseppi Curri et Adria Perez Soler. Mais à l’approche de la ligne droite des stands qui clôturait le septième tour, Curri ralentissait soudainement et piégeait son poursuivant Perez Soler qui n’avait d’autres choix que de percuter la MX5 de Curri. Un abandon supplémentaire qui réduisait à dix-huit le nombre de voitures en piste sur les vingt-trois partants.

Devant, la bataille pour la deuxième place entre Sicilia et Maillard s’intensifiait alors que Coba-Lopez, remonté en quatrième position, était à distance respectable pour profiter d’une éventuelle erreur du trio de tête. Bien lui en prenait puisque Sicilia et Maillard se touchaient dans le double gauche – aussi appelé « le Revolver » – laissant Sicilia partir à la faute avant de taper les barrières de sécurité. Si le pilote de la MX5 #9 repartait, il devenait rapidement évident que sa voiture avait subi des dégâts trop importants pour continuer. Jesus Sicilia était donc le sixième et dernier abandon dans cette course.

Alors qu’il ne restait que cinq tours à disputer, la course se résumait à une bataille à trois entre Franczak, Maillard et Coba-Lopez pour la victoire. Derrière le trio de tête, deux autres groupes de trois voitures étaient en lutte pour les quatrième et septième positions : Bouteloup, Szabó, Gelink d’un côté et López, Pommarede, Danilo Jacobs de l’autre.

Bien que Pommarede faisait de son mieux pour trouver  l’ouverture sur López, il devait aussi garder un œil dans son rétroviseur pour maintenir Jacobs – l’équipier de Lopez –  juste derrière lui.  Mais le Français n’y parvenait pas et voyait Jacobs prendre l’avantage, pour quelques instants seulement, puisque Pommarede récupérait cette position pour terminer huitième entre López et Jacobs.
A l’abord des deux derniers tours, Franczak et Maillard creusaient un léger écart sur Coba-Lopez. Maillard tentait alors plusieurs attaques pour s’emparer de la première place face à Franczak, ce qui forçait ce dernier à adopter des trajectoires très défensives. Coba-Lopez n’en demandait pas tant et revenait rapidement sur les deux hommes à l’entame du dernier tour.

Derrière les leaders, la bataille pour la cinquième place était également animée entre Szabó et Gelink, qui échangeaient quelques coups de portières au passage… Gelink effectuait finalement un rapide passage hors-piste avant de rejoindre le tracé en sixième position.

Franczak négociait parfaitement son dernier tour et coupait finalement la ligne avec 261 millièmes de secondes d’avance sur Maillard et Coba-Lopez. Quatrième place pour Bouteloup devant Szabó et Gelink qui complétaient le top-6 et devançaient le trio composé de López, Pommarede et Jacobs. La dernière place du top-10 revenait à Ion Ander Zugasti.

Peu de changements dans le top-10 du classement général après cette course d’Okayama, hormis pour Sicilia qui perd gros, passant de la quatrième à la douzième position, après son abandon. Le trio de tête reste inchangé alors que Lespinasse fait sa première apparition dans le top-20.

La quatrième manche de la Coupe iRacing MX5 Europe aura lieu sur le Daytona International Speedway, version  « r-oval ». Combinant à la fois le tracé infield, la très difficile chicane de l’arrêt de bus et presque toute la partie ovale de ce superspeedway de 2,5 mile, Daytona sera certainement une course de « draft » où la chance de voir une nouvelle photo finish est élevée.
