Grand Prix Turn Racing iRacing Series Race Preview: Silverstone

The Grand Prix Turn Racing iRacing Series takes on the Silverstone Circuit for its fourth round of the 2023 season on Thursday. The action kicks off at 19:00 GMT (3PM ET) and will stream live across iRacing social media channels.

Last Race: It was a change of scenery for the entire open-wheel field last week, as the high banks of Texas Motor Speedway made for the first-ever oval round in series history and a showcase of the Dallara iR-01’s new-for-2023 oval package. But while the setting was new, the winner wasn’t, as Florian Lebigre brought it home ahead of David Toth, Jarl Teien, and Pablo Espes as the top four were separated by just .071 seconds at the line.

Last Season: Silverstone’s 2021 round was one of many that went to Maarten van Loozenoord. The British circuit saw van Loozenoord lead 11 of the race’s 40 laps on the way to his third win in the first half of the campaign, as well as his second in a row.

Track Facts: Known as the “Home of British Motor Racing,” Silverstone Circuit was originally a Royal Air Force base before the Royal Automobile Club first leased the land in 1948. Since then, it’s been one of England’s premier circuits, from hosting the first-ever event in the World Driver’s Championship in 1950 to taking over the British Grand Prix permanently since 1987. Originally boasting many long straightaways and fast corners, the track was transformed for the 1991 season into a more technical layout. Further re-profiling continued through the 1990s, before another redesign in 2010 and the relocation of pit road a year later gave the track its current shape.

Next Up: The halfway point of the 2023 Grand Prix Turn Racing iRacing Series sends the series to Circuit Zandvoort on Thursday, October 12. An all-new scan of Zandvoort was one of the highlights of last month’s 2023 Season 4 build, featuring its updated configuration as the new host of the Dutch Grand Prix; as a result, this will be the new layout’s premiere as host of a professional iRacing esports event.
