Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series Race Preview: Virginia

The 2023 Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series closes in on crowning a champion with its penultimate round at VIRginia International Raceway. Coverage kicks off tonight at 8PM ET across iRacing social media channels.

About the Series: The Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series is where future stars of real-world motorsport prove themselves in the virtual one. Using the iRacing Formula iR-04, drivers take part in an open qualifier each week, and the top racers are selected to compete on Thursday nights. Drivers can earn Skip Barber Racing School credits and courses each week, and the top three drivers earn a five-day Competition Licensing Race School at SBRS to compete in the real-world Skip Barber Formula Race Series—with a full season at stake for the champion.

Last Race: Back-to-back wins for series veteran Harley Haughton at Circuit of the Americas allowed the British driver to whittle down the points gap to just one behind 2022 Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup champion Diogo Pinto. Haughton led all 16 laps in the double-feature event after qualifying on pole, but that doesn’t mean the races were without drama; the second race in particular saw second through 10^th place separated by less than two seconds coming to the line.

Track Facts: VIRginia International Raceway originally opened in 1957, but the track was closed from 1974 to 2000 until new ownership reopened it with membership options for local racers. The track hosts numerous top American road racing series, most notably a GT-only round for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and has often been used by NASCAR teams to test road course setups. The 3.27-mile, 17-turn full course is one of many configurations available at VIR, ranging in length from the Patriot Course at just over a mile to the Grand Course at more than four.

Next Up: The Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series season concludes next Thursday at Road America, where the top three points finishers will secure their real-world Skip Barber Formula Race Series opportunities.
