BMW’s long-awaited return to the highest ranks of prototype racing came in 2023, as the German manufacturer brought the BMW M Hybrid V8 to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Built to a new set of global prototype regulations, the original car debuted on iRacing before its first real-world racing lap. For 2026, the car received an Evo update before being placed in the hands of BMW’s new factory team partner, Team WRT.
Years of coordinated efforts in both North America and Europe to create a unified top-level rule set allowed top-tier manufacturers to return to the prototype ranks, with BMW one of the first to announce its involvement. The M Hybrid V8 Evo produces approximately 640 horsepower out of its four-liter powerplant alone, with its electric motor able to add even more boost. The Evo variant features extensive updates including extensive new aerodynamic work and redesigned headlight architecture for better night vision.
